The generation of new neurons in the human hippocampus drops sharply in children to undetectable levels in adults. It can be said, therefore, that hippocampal neurogenesis in adults is virtually nonexistent, contrary to what has been thought in recent decades. The work, launched by Nature magazine last March, reconfirms the results in a review published now in Cell Stem Cell. This work, developed by the neurobiologist team of the University of Valencia José Manuel García Verdugo (Institut Cavanilles), in collaboration with other international laboratories, confirms the first hypotheses again.
